Chapter 10: Walking His Path

As if the universe was answering my question, my phone began to ring. Reaching up and grabbing it off the top of the sink where I had left it, I glanced down at the caller ID. Sure enough, it was Mom.

I didn’t have time to deal with her right now, which didn’t seem fair to say. In my grief, I had forgotten that she was grieving, too. She had gone through as much as she could when she was back for the funeral, but all too soon her life called her back to the Sunshine State and she had to go. Time doesn’t just stop ticking along when those we love leave this earth. Our lives have to find a way to keep rolling along.

The truth was, she was probably just calling to check in on me, to see how far I had gotten. She knew that I hadn’t been feeling too well lately, and even though things are still strained between us, she was still my mom, still a worrier, and will probably keep calling until she hears my voice again. I also guessed that she would leave me a message, then promptly hang up and call Banks to see what she has to say.

Banks has always been the go-between of the family. News travels fast with Banks and her chatty conversations, so if you were ever not in the know about something, that girl was the one to go to. I hadn’t even finished my thought when the phone pinged, notifying me of the message. “I will listen to it later. Maybe after a quick shower. I have to get going here,” I thought to myself as I reached into the linen cupboard above the tub to grab a couple of towels to head downstairs.

I had thought about taking a nice long bath in the tub, but the dang thing took so long to fill with what little water pressure the farm had in the lines out there, and I was losing time already. I needed to be quick about my business. I grabbed a couple of old towels, the shampoo, a bar of soap, and flung the old journal back onto the counter as I headed out of the bathroom.

Walking by the old kitchen window with Oz closely following at my heels, movement caught my eye towards the hog house. Standing there staring at virtually nothing for a few seconds, I saw something shaking the tall grass that had been left to grow alongside the hog house in Granddad’s absence.

Two furry little faces stuck out long enough to be identified.

“Well, crap. They found their way home,” I said to Oz, noticing two of the younger farm cats that the neighbor had trapped and taken up to his farm. They had magically returned, lovingly hanging around the hog house waiting for Granddad to come out and feed them. I decided that after my shower, I would run some food down to them before I moved on with my day.
